WP4: User personalization

  • Work package number: 4
  • Start date: Month 3
  • End date: Month 23
  • Work package title: User personalization

  • Implementing the possibility to subdivide the contents of Manuscriptorium into thematic collections. To satisfy the needs of all Manuscriptorium end-users, thematic collections will be created and maintained by authorised experts.
  • Furthermore, end-users will be able to construct their own individual collections and virtual documents via usage of newly developed tools – this will create opportunities to build individual user virtual libraries according to their personal needs (such as study, teaching etc.). The tools will enable to decompose the digitized documents into necessary chunks/analytical digital objects and recompose them in new virtual documents following special teaching or learning goals, e.g. showing all illuminations from one scriptorium in a virtual document in spite of the fact that they are from various originals owned by different institutions in different countries.

Description of work

  • Work package leader: MICF
  • Task 4.1:Analysis of needs of typical end-users (mostly researchers and teachers) in view to implementation of common collections into Manuscriptorium (m3-m12)
    • Task leader: AIP
    • Participants in Task: : all
    • Analysis of competences, the ways of creation and maintenance of common collection;
    • Definition and creation of basic set of tools for creation and maintenance of common collections in Manuscriptorium;
    • Implementation of the usual ways to work with common collections in Manuscriptorium;
    • Splitting of the content stored in “Open catalogue of historic funds” under Manuscriptorium platform into individual thematic collections and their publication in Manuscriptorium.
  • Task 4.2:Creation of individual collections for end-users (m3-m15)
    • Task leader: PSCN
    • Participants in Task: all
    • Definition of requirements for the system for creation, maintenance and sharing of individual users’ collections/libraries;
    • Realization of the pilot solution of this system with existing technical resources.
  • Task 4.3:Creation of virtual documents for research and teaching purposes (m6-m18)
    • Task leader: MICF
    • Participants in Task: all
    • Analysis of needs for creation of virtual documents for research and teaching purposes, customization of the system and tools for their creation;
    • Pilot implementation with existing technical resources, creation of sample virtual documents relating to the results of WP3, and publication of tools for free download;
    • Approving of possibility to import documents into special collections in Manuscriptorium.
  • Task 4.4:Evaluation of bibliographic searching capabilities of Manuscriptorium (m3-m21)
    • Task leader: AIP
    • Participants in Task: NKP, OUCS, UZK, PSNC, MICF
    • Implementation of tracking of searching behaviour of Manuscriptorium users to gather information for analysis and continuous improvement of research tools.
    • Analysis of possibilities to:
      • Use complex query using the search of optionally independent groups of words, searching with certain level of tolerance, respecting middle ages linguistic variations;
      • Query interpretation based on the type of user, with the aim to reduce wrong results for simple queries;
      • Use predefined partial complex queries.
    • Implementation of analysis results into search engines of Manuscriptorium with relation to the results of WP3.
  • Task 4.5:Implementation of deep searching possibilities above all metadata and textual data: the quality enhancement of search opportunities both above metadata and full texts. (m12-m23)
    • Task leader: MICF
    • Participants in Task: NKP, AIP, OUCS, KU, UZK, PSNC
    • The access to the digital content through intelligent operators, performing a semantic search of metadata;
    • Morphology operators will be used to access in a fast way data characterized by specific descriptors;
    • Testing and validation of tools will be based on multilingual data sets created in the frame of WP6.

(Inter-) Dependencies, milestones and expected result

  • M4.1:Meeting of representatives from other European institutions who have previously used the MASTER schema and other external experts, i.e. from “associated partners” at Month 3, organized by KU.
  • The results and used strategies will strongly depend on the results of WP2, mostly in case of T 3.2.
  • The feedback is necessary from WP7.
